Shipwrecked Sailor
   In this story of an Egyptian sailor cast on an island ruled by a serpent king there is a relic of a disaster myth. The serpent tells that he used to dwell on the island with his brethren until ‘a star fell and these came into the fire which fell with it’. The mysterious island may perhaps be Calypso’s Isle mentioned by Homer nearly three thousand years later. This papyrus, which is in the Leningrad Museum, has been translated many times.
